When to do first oil change?

Just bought an 06 DC and notice the sticker the dealer put in the window said 5000 miles for the first oil change. My last Toyota was an 04 Corolla and the dealer wanted me to come in after 1500 miles to flush out and metal shavings after the general break in. My question is should I go 5000 miles for the first oil change, or was the first dealer pulling my leg?

The owner's manual does not say to do the initial oil change at 1500. The dealer tells you to come in at 1500 miles because it sounds plausible that there will be more junk in the oil from a brand new engine, and they'll make a few bucks and hopefully get you to keep coming back every 3000 miles.

Doing an initial oil change at 1500 miles is up to you. If its cheap for you, then why not--it won't hurt anything. It's cheap insurance. Otherwise, just stay within the manufacturer guidelines.

Personally i'd do the first change at 500 miles then 3 changes @3K w/dino oil then around 10K i'd go to synthetic. But that's just what i'd do.

I always run the factory oil to 2500 miles then change to mobil 1. I've done this with every new car I've had.

I did mine at 1400 and I am going in tomorrow for my 5000 and switch to mobil1 and then i will see how often i need to change it after this

I changed mine today for the first time on my new 06 double cab at 700. Nothing special about that mileage, just that it was a nice warm Fall day and I had the afternoon off. Put in Mobil 1 5W30. I will change it again at 5000, and then thereafter every 5000.
I actually think that if you're going to change your oil every 5000 as Toyota recommends, then you probably don't need synthetic, the dino should be just fine. However, I live in Maine and we get some seriously cold winter weather.
The other reason I use synthetic is that when I took the valve cover off my old 1986 Jetta when it had 145,000 miles on synthetic--- it looked like a TV commercial--- everything shining like brand new stainless--no gunk, nothing brown and black, just perfect.
Seems like cheap insurance to me to go with synthetic if you plan to keep your vehicle a long time. If you're someone who trades every four or five years, I'd say don't waste your money on synthetic.

I'm closest to this regimine except I changed it out at 1000 and then exactly 3 - 3k changes later I'm right at 10k.... then I'll get a larger capacity filter and go every 5k miles with syn
