Grease-gun head diameter

Has anyone determined the precise diameter necessary for the grease-gun tip to reach and snap onlto all the fittings along the drivetrain? I know that some of you have mentioned grinding it down to make it fit. I can turn the tip down on my lathe, but I'd prefer to know what diameter I'm looking for before I do that. Thanks. PR

I ended up buying a needle adapter that snaps on the coupler of my grease gun. It works very well for the front driveshaft zerks. The standard small diameter coupler works fine for all the fittings on the rear driveshaft.

Hah, I've never seen any advice as to grinding it down or turning it. But I have seen plenty of info on here about the needle adaptors.

Try doing a search on here for this and other subjects. There's plenty of information online here that more than pertains to this subject including links to purchasing avenues and types of grease suggested as well as caps for the Zerk fittings.

I don't know about the "dealers" but every "decent" shop I know uses the long needle adapter mentioned by Ken. I've got a picture of one in my photos if you want to compare the various grease gun tips. I ground my "normal small fitting" nose down to .480 and it works fine on most hard to get at zerks. It worked fine on the front Tundra fittings until I put the transmission skid plate on and now I use the long needle adapter, as it's a lot easier to reach the zerk with the extended body on the adapter. When I ground my fitting down, I did so by trial and error to make it fit the tight spots on my old 4X4 and had no idea of the actual diameter until now as I just measured it for you as a go by.

Got the number!

Hey,
I first gound the tip of a grease gun.Just made four flat sides on a bench grinder.
I still had difficulty getting to the double cardan grease fittings. So I got this at aTS ers suggestion.
Sears sells a Lubrimatic #11867
Sears has9 50019 on the reciept.
I thing it was less than $10.
Also a good tip is the zerk caps.
I got them at AVlube.com

A little helper update on grease gun adapters.
All of the sudden after 4 1/2 years I can't get grease in the foward double cardain joint zerk. The zerk is good just can't get the angle. It must have moved.
So I search on the WWW and find this:
4 inch needle nose adapter(#B-20210324) at RedHill general store for $9.57.
@1-800-251-8824.
Finally tried it.
It works well .
It should work on all the drive shaft zerks.
