Pulling a trailer

I own a 2008 DC Tundra, 5.7 and I was puliing an enclosed trailor filled with a friend of mine's stuff because he is moving. Now, I put the truck in tow-mode and the trailer probably weighed about 5000-6000 lbs loaded. I found that the truck was really working and when we arrived at our destination which was only 10 miles away, the smell that came from engine was as if it was overworked. Any suggestions??

Yes, the trailer has brakes but they didn't seem to be sticking. The trailer was doing an awful amount of chucking so I will check that this Friday. there was no smoke coming from the trailer either. My parking brakes were off as well

There should be NO reason for your vehicle to handle that load. Something is definately amiss...

something is wrong...that load isnt even a load for the truck... shouldnt even work hard at all, more like you shouldnt really notice it back there. so...obviously the trailer has an issue, either brakes that are locked up or dragging or bearings that are so far gone they are causing huge amounts of drag. one or the other. but its definitely not the truck...not sure why it would smell i bet it was the trailer and not the 'yota.

I am thinking the trailer is the issue. One thing that came up yesterday was my wife was saying that the truck was shifting hard and was not acting normal. The I drove it last night and it seemed alright but it was doing the missing when I slowed down (around 10 to 15 km) for a stop sign and then touch the gas and it rev's up and then catchs. I am really starting to think there is something wrong with the truck. It is an '08 with 19,000 km on it. Never driven hard. My Toyota dealer told me that nothing is wrong with the truck, but I am not convinced. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

is this after you've just started the truck (let's say after it's been sitting in your garage or driveway overnight before work in the morning)? or after the engine has warmed up?

From day 1, with my truck there are the infrequent occurrences where it feels like it can't quite decide which gear it's in, then it catches. I told the dealer about it and they said it's normal. My truck still drives fine at 40,000 miles, and I've also towed a much bigger and heavier trailer much longer distances than you're describing.

Might be two different things: 1: Transmission sometimes takes a second to decide which gear it's in (normal I guess, others have also described this in various threads) and 2: problem with the trailer you were towing, because 6,000 lbs doesn't even start to stress the 5.7 Tundra.

My $0.02.

Do you have a brake controller installed in your Tundra?
