This year I bought an 04 double cab and have about 10k miles. I have been averaging about 16.5 mpg. I heard about cold air induction kits but and courious as to what other Tundra owner have used and what theri results were. I have seens these kits ranging any where from 250 on up. On ebay I found a kit witha chrome tube with blue filter for 80 bucks. Any thoughts... [/FO :ts: NT]

The truck already has a cold air induction. Look at the air box and notice the tube going to the passenger side wheel well. That's where it's getting air, not from the engine compartment. I haven't tried them but most people don't like the aftermarket cold air kits.

Cold Air Induction Kit Thoughts

Your right, I see exactly what your saying.

All I am looking for is a a non-invasive and inexpensive mod to inprove more gas mileage and power. Another aftermarket item that I have heard about is a throttle body bolt on called a Helix Power Tower. It's supposed to swirl the air going into the throttle body for better fuel atomization. The manufacturer claims increased hp and mpg.

Thoughts...

Thanks :ts:

well if you like the sound of your engine whistiling, and the thought of wasting 250 bones then go for it! LOL. Honestly, the only decent airbox mod is probably the RAPS kit by tremo available in the tundra solutions store. Check that out and see what you think.

haha yeah those power tower things are 250 dollar paper weights. i cant think of any mods that would give you actual MPG gains in the real world. Trucks just have crappy areodynamics. you cant change that. basically, if you want more MPG, get a car or bike to drive daily. :p

Helo,
Isn't your goal actually for a lower cost of driving? You can get better gas mileage from good headers, but they'll never pay for themselves. You need to pay off the gizmos before you start saving money.

Power tower, so-called cold air intake, etc. Good gas mileage and good power are huge helps to selling lots of trucks. If Toyota could improve gas mileage and power, without causing any problems in other areas, by making these changes, they already would have. They could build in the Helix or the Powertower for, what?, 23¢ worth of plastic.

Don't buy gizmos. Air up your tires, don't carry around a lot of heavy junk, don't keep racks on the top if you aren't using them, avoid jackrabbit starts, do maintenance on schedule, and you'll get the best mileage possible.

On the original throttle bodies used by the domestic manufacturers where the throttle body was basically a carburetor replacement, there was maybe some truth in these claims. But on any sequential fuel injection engine like the Tundra's....where the fuel is injected right at the intake port in the head and waaaaay downstream of the throttle body...the claims of increased fuel atomization are totally bogus. Furthermore, since the device does add some resistance to the airflow, it will actually hurt mileage and power.

These devices do two things very well though: First, they're a really good way to obtain a loud whistling sound in your intake system. Second, they're remarkably efficient at sucking money out of the wallets of folk who don't understand the fuel system on their vehicles and thereby producing a really huge profit for the companies that make and sell them.

BTW, both of your questions have been raised and answered a number of times in the past. Before you post questions in the future, please do a search on the topic...you will likely find a lot more information than you will get in a single new post.

Tell you what....send me the $250.00 and I'll send you something 100x better :D

I'll send you a RAPS (cost $109.00) and and I'll put the $140.00 into the "Tundra research fund". :tu:

.

this is a very good point. just for knowledge sake, yes they did help alot on thottle body injection vehicles. in this setup the fuel injectors were on top of the thottle body. like you say, it looks just like a carb but its EFI. because the air and fuel mixed before the chamber, it was helpful to space it up and give them more time to mix.

with multiport injection the spacers do nothing, the air and fuel do not mix until they are in the firing chamber. i agree that it can only harm your performance

hey matt,

ive quite a few bolt-on mods under the hood at this point, and they will never, ever pay for themselves in reduced full cost. they do provide greater range and power off the line, the increase in mileage is nice but really secondary.

changing the airflow causes the engine to respond in ways you might not expect, if youre doing this for milage stick with ken's suggestions and save your money.

Hey,

You can get you more power & mpg (NOT CHEAP) by installing headers....

You can gain better mpg (CHEAP but invasive...) You'll have to drill a 2.00" hole in your stock airbox to add the RAPS kit...

I HAVE the RAPS kit (+25K miles) added to my K&N FIPK intake. It DOES work as advertised. I gained a minimum .50 mpg along with better pedal response in higher gears. (Over 40 mph...)

I added JBA headers about 7K miles ago. Really like the added power after 2800rpms. I'd say I've gained another 25-35 miles per tank which equates to another 1 mpg. I'm over 18 miles a gallon going 400 miles per week on non-rush hour LA freeways......

I suggest you start w/the RAPS kit and keep your stock airbox and stk air filter. ( "Fail cheaply...." as my Pop would say.... ;) ) If you really need more power then add headers later on.

Just type "headers" in the SEARCH Box... You'll have plenty of reading.... JB

Air box

I have a 2003 Tundra Limited 4X4 and have added the K&N FIPK and the Airaid Throttle Body spacer. I have no whistling sound and it has helped the mileage and performance. I also have JBA Titaium Headers with Flowmaster Delta Series 50 Duals. Last tank used was for city/highway combined driving and I got 19.5 MPG. I have just ordered a Hellwig Sway Bar and Wheeler Coils for the front and also Centric Cross Drilled/Slotted rotors with Porterfield Kevlar R4S pads. Can't wait to install these parts. I will have completed my mission with my Tundra at that point. If TRD gets the Supercharger working properly I would like to add that but $4,000.00 is alot of money.
