The vvti motor came out in 05. HP jumped up to 282 and then recalculated in 06 to 270. They both have the same hp just a different formula to figure it. I'm guessing your truck is pre- 2005 and the lexus is post 05. have a good day...

Correct - the 2004 Tundra has 242 horsepower. I am not sure what the same year Lexus has. I would love to have another 30 horses (or more) under my hood but she gets the job done as is.

I'm curious... where are those additional 30 or so horses at on the hp/torque curve?

id say due long tubes (shorties at least) headers, full exaust, and a cold air intakr and u should get close to 25 hp. and a seafoam wont hurt (but that will give u back power u lost over the years.
did a cold air intake when i first got my truck did a seafoam treat ment about 2 years later and added headers and i got a good bit of power out of it

well, i was comparing both first year trucks. NON vvti. i got my numbers from wikipedia and they both came out first gen with 4.7 non vvti. forget the reclaiming of power over the years, they both came with the same engine from the factory but the gx has more horses. theres a swap waiting for us that the gx has. we need to find out if its a computer, a cam, etc. ?????

hi want more hp & torque. pre vvti, get a trd s/c & your done.
we with the vvti didnt have that option ,till of late,
sadly many of us did alot. & like i dont want to redo.
if your just starting out, just s/c. you will be very happy. i wish i had that option.
well, next 1 for sure

why does the lexus 4.6 have 380 hp and the tundra 4.6 has 310?

I'm just taking a stab but I think it might have to do with gear, cam, computer ratios and what you want to do with the motor. Truck for towing with emphasis on torque all around and SUV for leisure cruising with less emphasis on torque.

There was a Top Gear episode about the lambo and evo. The evo would out class the lambo when in racing mode but the 4 banger turbo lag nullified it against a pinto esque car.

In case you're wondering, when I was shopping around 3 years ago for my truck, I drove some 04's and 03's. They drove pretty much the same as my 06, had the same get up and go almost, but what made the difference was the transmission. Having a 5 speed over a 4 speed made all the difference in the world.

Oh, and I may be wrong, but I'm under the impression most luxury cars are tuned for higher hp ratings than torque, so, there ya go.

Horsepower is calculated from torque, by RPM. This is how a turbocharged inline diesel six can make thousands of pounds of torque at low HP. Look at the redline...HP is a marketing number, torque is what gets the job done.

Most likely difference is simply different programming. The early 4.7L, non-VVTI, receives a substantial boost from tuning alone via the Unichip. I don't claim that's it, just saying that is most likely how it's done. Start changing the exhaust (not the muffler, the exhaust...as in, from the heads back), and you may pick up more through headers, muffler and so forth.

I will give you the short answer...a couple of you guys were pretty close.

If you compare an 04 in both models, they are the same (I think the LX make 5 more ft/lbs)

The blocks are the same between the two motors...the biggest differance is the transmission which is a 5spd and the Tundra still has the 4spd for those years.

Now, if your talking about the GS and LS, they have a 4.3 V8 that uses the same block, the difference is in the heads and cams. The Lexus has a little more compression and head port design with a different cam profile which explains the increase in HP. I've seen a few people over the years switch out the heads/cams/intake maifold from a lexus into the Tundras, and Lexus owners use the Tundra heads on turbo conversions to help lower the compression.
